PSA Testing
PSA testing is in many regards a complicated issue. The Red Book has been updated to reflect the findings of large population studies which have shown benefits in prostate cancer screening. As the techniques and technology used to investigate and diagnose prostate cancer have evolved we have seen earlier and more precise diagnosis, and treatment.

Who should have screening?

Men over 50 years old

Men with a life expectancy of at least 7 years

What age should screening start?

In men with a strong family history of breast or prostate cancer: 40 years

In men with a single family member with breast or prostate cancer: 45 years

In men with no family history of breast or prostate cancer: 50 years
How frequently should testing be done?

Medicare will fund one PSA test every 2 years
-
In those with a strong family history or who are concerned it is reasonable to test annually
